Biography

Biographical Sketch: Carl E. Orringer, MD, FACC 

Dr. Orringer, an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the University of Miami School of Medicine, did his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Miami Affiliated Hospitals. He won multiple teaching awards during his internship and residency training. He completed his cardiology fellowship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and in 1979, accepted a staff position at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, where he directed the coronary care unit and the cardiac rehabilitation program. In 1986 Dr. Orringer joined the faculty of the University of Michigan Medical Center where he developed and directed the preventive cardiology program and was active in patient care, hyperlipidemia-related clinical research and community outreach programs directed at cardiovascular health. In 1992 he moved to Cleveland where he developed a community-based preventive cardiology program for University Hospitals Case Medical Center. In 2009 he joined the full-time academic faculty, was appointed as an associate professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and was named the Harrington Chair in Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. He served as the director of the preventive cardiovascular medicine program, the lipid clinic and the LDL apheresis program at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute. In May 2014 Dr. Orringer joined the faculty of the Cardiology Division at the University of Miami Medical Center. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases and became certified by the American Board of Clinical Lipidology as a clinical lipidologist in 2005. 

 

He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and of the National Lipid Association. He is a past President of the Midwest Lipid Association. He served as program co-chairman for the Midwest Lipid Association 2011 Scientific Sessions and as Program co-chairman of the National Lipid Association Scientific Sessions in 2010. He has served on the Board of Directors of the National Lipid Association since 2009. He served as Secretary in 2012-2013, Treasurer in 2013-2014 and will be President-Elect of the National Lipid Association in 2014-2015. 

 

He has been an editorial reviewer and faculty contributor to the National Lipid Association Self Assessment Programs and to the Complex Lipid Management Self-Assessment Programs. He was a contributing editor to the American Diabetes Association Self Assessment Program in Lipoprotein Management in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiometabolic Risk and to the Johns Hopkins University Self-Assessment Program on the Clinical Utility of Non-HDL Cholesterol in the Management of Dyslipidemia. 

 

He served as the Editor of the 2011 update of National Lipid Association Self-Assessment Programs and was the Editor-in-Chief of both the print and electronic version of third edition of this educational program, published in September 2013. In December 2013 he edited the National Lipid Association’s web-based Clinical Lipidology Fellows’ Self-Assessment Program which is used to train cardiology and endocrinology fellows and internal medicine housestaff in principles of clinical lipidology. He was the editor of the National Lipid Association Complex Lipid Management Self Assessment Program published in 2014. 

 

Dr. Orringer has authored multiple peer-reviewed clinical papers, has written several book chapters and co-authored The Grocery Shopping Guide, the first consumer-directed book to analyze grocery products to help the public make more informed decisions about the groceries they purchase.
