Starbucks Opens at University of Miami Hospital

UM President Donna E. Shalala cut the ribbon opening the new Starbucks in the lobby of University of Miami Hospital on Monday. Hospital employees and leadership celebrated the arrival of the coffee shop, which will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala delivered the summit’s keynote address via simulcast from the main location at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Retired Radiologist Robert F. Feltman’s Teaching Legacy Honored at Luncheon

When Robert F. Feltman, M.D., joined the Department of Radiology at UM’s medical school in 1960, he so enjoyed teaching gastrointestinal fellows to read and make diagnoses from X-rays that, for decades, he spent his own time conducting bi-weekly training conferences on campus. Fifty-three years later, Feltman and his family returned to the Miller School for a luncheon honoring his work and lifetime commitment to teaching.

Family Medicine Expert Returns to Miller School to Lead New Inpatient Service

Ramos Gomez, M.D., who recently completed his family medicine residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital after serving in a number of clinical and administrative capacities around the world, has returned to the Miller School to develop a new Family Medicine Inpatient Service at University of Miami Hospital that provides prompt, efficient, and effective patient- and community-centered care.

The request from cardiologist Alan Heldman, M.D., came on a Tuesday, March 19, just after 3 p.m., as Carlos E. Alfonso, M.D., was rounding at the VA: Could Alfonso mobilize a team and get to Panama right away? A 42-year-old diplomat at the U.S. Embassy had suffered a massive heart attack the day before, and without the mechanical pump UM doctors had helped prove effective in the U.S., he would likely die.

Study Supports Transaortic Approach Over Transapical for Valve Replacements

May 21, 2013

Cardiology experts at the Miller School showed in the first study of its kind that transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) using the transaortic approach may result in less bleeding, fewer vascular complications, and a shorter recovery time than using the transapical route. Published online in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the study results hold promise for patients with severe aortic stenosis.

The celebration of National Nurses Week at UHealth’s three hospitals reached a crescendo May 10, when Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez presented a proclamation with Miami-Dade Commissioner Javier Souto to “honor the folks that really make hospitals run.” Drawing laughter at the festive ceremony at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Gimenez said, “I know doctors think they do, but we really know the truth.”

UMH Earns Quality Respiratory Care Recognition in National Program

The Respiratory Therapy Program at University of Miami Hospital has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) under a national program identifying the top respiratory programs in the nation. The University of Miami Hospital team, led by Pilar Hombreiro, RRT-NPS, CPFT, RN, met a series of criteria to become one of just 15 percent of U.S. hospitals to receive the award.

Jazz Duo Performs Wednesday at Sylvester for “The Musicians Will See You Now” Concert Series

UHealth will present the second in a series of musical performances by students from the Frost School of Music on Wednesday, April 24, at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Freshman guitarist Jonah Udall from Rochester, New York, and upright bassist Daniel Montgomery, a sophomore from Berkeley, California, will perform in the Sylvester courtyard from 12:30 to 1 p.m., relocating to the second-floor lobby from 1 to 1:30 p.m.

UMH Stages Successful Drill to Prepare for Unthinkable Disaster

Last Wednesday unfolded at University of Miami Hospital as the kind of day doctors, nurses and other staff hope they will never see, but are well-prepared to handle: An explosion on a cruise ship two miles offshore had unleashed smoke, fire and a chemical vapor of unknown origin, inflicting various burns, respiratory distress, blunt trauma and lacerations on 150 people. Some survivors were one their way to UMH.

After joining the University of Michigan faculty in 1994, Mauro Moscucci, M.D., M.B.A., was asked to explain why the mortality rate for patients who underwent angioplasty at the university’s hospital was much higher than that of a regional center. He assumed the sickest patients were being transferred to the university, but having no data to support that, he began collecting it, improving coronary care for everyone.
