UHealth Sets the Pace at Miami-Dade Heart Walk

More than 300 walkers representing UHealth-University of Miami Health System joined the Miami-Dade Heart Walk Saturday, November 1, at Bayfront Park. Raising nearly $13,000 to help fund research and education sponsored by the American Heart Association, UHealth placed third among all of the companies participating in the event. A total of $366,000 was raised.

UHealth Becomes First in Southeast U.S. to Use New Heart Failure Monitoring System

Cardiovascular physicians at UHealth – University of Miami Health System are the first in the Southeast U.S. to implant a new miniaturized, wireless monitoring sensor to manage heart failure. The CardioMEMS HF System has been shown to reduce hospital admissions by more than one-third when used by physicians to manage heart failure. It was implanted at University of Miami Hospital, the flagship hospital of UHealth.

For Carl E. Orringer, M.D., the newest faculty member in the Cardiovascular Division, the move from Cleveland to Miami is a homecoming. Orringer is a triple ’Cane, with a B.A. in chemistry (1970), an M.D. (1974) and a residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital (1977). Thirty-seven years later, he’s back, bringing with him a high-profile cardiovascular disease-prevention program that he developed.

David Zambrana, D.N.P., M.B.A., RN, has been named Chief Executive Officer of the University of Miami Hospital. Zambrana, who was previously the hospital’s chief operating officer, has served as interim CEO since January. He joined the University of Miami Hospital (UMH) as chief nursing officer in 2008.

The procedure, a prostatectomy, was performed by Dipen Parekh, M.D., at University of Miami Hospital, the flagship hospital of UHealth.

Alan S. Livingstone, M.D., the Lucille and DeWitt Daughtry Professor and Chairman of Surgery, is usually addressed as “Dr. Livingstone,” sometimes as “Professor Livingstone.” Now there is a new option: “Your Excellency.” On March 27, Livingstone was inducted into Brazil’s National Academy of Medicine, one of the oldest and most exclusive medical academies in the world, and the title accompanies that honor.
