Miami-Dade Commissioner Rebeca Sosa paid a holiday season visit to the executive offices of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System on December 21 to present a commendation to Rogerio G. Carrillo, M.D., M.B.A., professor of clinical surgery and cardiothoracic surgeon at University of Miami Hospital (UMH), for his lifesaving work treating county residents over a career spanning nearly four decades.

Dr. Sakir Humayun Gultekin Joins Sylvester and Department of Pathology

Sakir Humayun Gultekin, M.D., has joined Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and UHealth. Gultekin will serve as Director of Clinical and Molecular Neuropathology for the University of Miami Brain Tumor Initiative, where he will support its comprehensive brain tumor program via clinical and basic science research.

Medical Education Conducts Skills Exercises for Third-Year Students

The University of Miami Hospital and Clinics welcomed 198 third-year Miller School of Medicine students from both the Miami and regional medical campuses for the 21st annual Objective Structured Clinical Examinations — a medical school rite of passage that tests the clinical skills of students. More than 100 faculty members served as evaluators in the annual assessment.

U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen presented a U.S. flag that had flown over the Capitol in Washington, D.C., to the team at the UHealth wheelchair clinic in recognition of their work with disabled patients. In attendance at the May 9 ceremony were Richard Ballard, CEO of University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, and Miller School Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D.

Dr. Sherri Hayes Establishes Student Scholarship Fund in Physical Therapy

After building the Department of Physical Therapy as its longtime Chair for nearly three decades, Sherrill Hayes, Ph.D., is now offering financial assistance to the Department’s students through a newly created scholarship fund. Hayes pledged $10,000 recently to establish the Dr. Sherri Hayes Student Scholarship Fund, which is designed to award funds for student-related travel expenses or scholarships.

In recognition of Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, head and neck cancer surgeons from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and medical students from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine will be conducting free oral, head and neck cancer screenings April 14-16.
