Dr. Mauro Moscucci Named Chief of the Cardiovascular Division at UHealth/University of Miami Miller

Mauro Moscucci, M.D., M.B.A., professor of medicine and vice chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has been named chief of the Cardiovascular Division, one of the fastest growing clinical areas at the University of Miami Health System. Moscucci is a national leader in health care research, known for a pioneering program that uses benchmarks to improve outcomes for cardiac patients with coronary artery disease.
Dr. Moscucci, an interventional cardiologist, joined the UHealth/Miller School in September 2008 from the University of Michigan, where he was director of interventional cardiology services and professor of medicine.
“Over the past several months Mauro has been working on many issues, which have been critical to the success of the Cardiovascular Division, and as a remarkably accomplished academic cardiologist he is very well suited to assume these new duties,” said Marc E. Lippman, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Medicine.
Moscucci’s research has significantly boosted care for cardiovascular patients. In Michigan, he worked with other doctors, hospitals and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to form a health care consortium, The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Cardiovascular Consortium, which developed a registry for Percutaneous Coronary Interventions – minimally invasive procedures in which the heart is treated using catheters – for cardiovascular patient treatments and outcomes in the state. The initiative also includes a collaborative continuous quality improvement program to improve clinical outcomes.
In the decade since the consortium was founded, the program has emerged as a benchmark for collaborative quality improvement efforts in health care. Data collected have been incorporated in guidelines for using the best evidence-based methods for catheterization lab procedures, such as angioplasties or stenting.
“I am thrilled to be assuming a leadership role of the Cardiovascular Division during such an incredible time of enormous growth within the division,” said Moscucci. “We will continue to build our already successful program into the best in all areas of diagnosis and treatment for cardiovascular disease.”
Dr. Moscucci succeeds Joshua Hare, M.D., as chief of the Cardiovascular Division. After a great performance as chief of cardiology and director of the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute (ISCI), Dr. Hare has decided to focus his efforts entirely on directing ISCI, a rapidly growing opportunity that will impact greatly both the University of Miami and the field of medicine.
Dr. Moscucci received his M.D. Magna Cum Laude from the University of Rome. He completed his residency in internal medicine at University of Rochester/Highland Hospital and fellowships in cardiology and clinical pharmacology at the University of Chicago, and in interventional cardiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Harvard University. He received his M.B.A. with High Distinction from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.
