Members of the UHealth and Miller School of Medicine team, headed by Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., were out in full force on January 25 for the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon that brought more than 12,000 runners and supporters to the city for the premier running event.
This year, in addition to those who represented UHealth on the 26.2- or 13.1-mile scenic race route, more than 30 physicians, 100 nurses and several medical students from UHealth and Jackson Memorial Hospital staffed a UHealth medical tent that dispensed care to dozens of athletes.
Mark McKenney, M.D., professor of surgery, chief of the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, and co-director of the Ryder Trauma Center, and Erin Wolff, M.D., assistant professor of rehabilitation medicine, directed the medical teams. UHealth Sports Medicine was also well represented – Lee Kaplan, M.D., chief of the division, ran the half marathon (he finished in 1:55:55) and members of his division were part of the medical teams.
