Gastrointestinal Center

GI Center at University of Miami Hospital

Dr. AbreuThe Gastrointestinal Center at University of Miami Hospital offers patients the most extensive and advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques available today. The GI Center consists of seven procedure rooms with fluoroscopy equipment and nine pre and post procedure beds, complete with the latest monitoring equipment. This center performs approximately 5,500 procedures per year. Our patient population is adult.

GI diseases and conditions often are treated without traditional surgery. Today, we use endoscopes (small flexible fiber-optic tubes carrying miniature video cameras along with micro tools). Procedures are performed while viewing a magnified image on a large video screen overhead.

Our department is made up of friendly, committed, highly competent and experienced professionals. We strive to exceed expectations by going the extra mile. Our top priority is courtesy and respect to our patients, their families, physicians and each other with emphasis on the highest level of patient and employee satisfaction.

  • Nausea
  • Heartburn
  • Vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea

Examinations

Through the use of endoscopes, specialists can:

  • Examine and perform therapies for the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, gall bladder and bile ducts
  • Remove polyps from the intestines
  • Remove gallstones impacted in the bile duct without surgery
  • Evaluate ulcer disease for possible bacterial origin, which is then treated with antibiotics instead of the more common anti-ulcer medications

Most Diagnostic procedures are done on an outpatient basis. Endoscopic procedures are performed with local anesthesia, moderate sedation or monitored anethesia care.  Patients often go home or return to work the same day. Laparoscopic diagnoses are also performed at the Center, under local anesthesia and sedation.
