Hepatology
Welcome to the Division of Hepatology and Center for Liver Diseases at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. Our Division has had a long tradition of excellence in liver disease under the leadership of Dr. Eugene (Gene) Schiff who is currently Director of the Center for Liver Diseases at the University. The Division has earned an international reputation in the care of patients with liver disease, has been a leader in clinical research and has trained many of the current leaders in Hepatology in the United States and around the world. The Division has an extremely active clinical practice at the hospitals and clinics on the Medical Campus of the University of Miami providing care for all forms of liver disease in adults. Division faculty participate in the care of patients who require liver transplantation at the University. Patients benefit from the expertise not only of our faculty but also specialists from other Departments in the Medical School including Surgery, Pathology and Radiology.
The Division has a very large clinical research program and is at the forefront of development of new therapies and diagnostic tests for viral hepatitis and other major forms of liver disease. Another important mission of the Division is the training of physicians who wish to specialize in liver disease. During the course of a one year fellowship the trainee attends the various teaching and clinical conferences of our Division including liver biopsy review, tumor board, liver transplant patient selection and didactic teaching sessions.
With a large staff, the Division's activities are campus wide. The Hepatology Diagnostic Laboratory is located at the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, administrative offices are in two locations, and outpatient facilities are at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics. Pre and post transplant clinics are at the Highland Park Building, and inpatient and outpatient facilities are at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Additionally, there is a fifteen bed liver unit at the University of Miami Hospital.
